Yeoh Siew Hoon gets a rooftop view of four aspects of Singapore, and right down below, the hair-pin bend of the soon-to-come Formula 1 race.

So I was up on the roof of the Fullerton Hotel last week and I saw with my little eye a 360 degree view of Singapore that encompassed the past, present and future of the cityscape.

From the top, the past – where it all began as a trading village on the river, and then as the eye moves a bit right, the civic and historical centre near the Padang, and towards the new Singapore with its reclaimed land where the Esplanade-Theatres On The Bay stands, and finally the future Singapore which will be dominated by the three towers of the Marina Bay Sands …

And then right down below me, a scene that will look – and sound – very different come the weekend of September 25-27 when the world’s fastest drivers come to town and take over the city’s roads for three days.

This is what is called the hair-pin bend visible from the rooftop of the Fullerton Hotel – supposedly the most exciting part of the Formula 1 race.
